St. Vital

St. Vital – a traditional meeting place

With its new residential developments and its highly popular St. Vital shopping mall, this neighbourhood south of St. Boniface is now one of Winnipeg’s most dynamic communities.

The area’s popularity is anything but recent! The junction of St. Mary’s Rd. and St. Anne’s Rd. in the heart of St. Vital has traditionally been a meeting place. St. Mary’s Rd., formerly known as Crow Wing Trail, was the region’s major transportation route used by Red River Carts to carry provisions from St. Boniface to Minnesota.

National Historic Site keeps the memory of Louis Riel alive

If a visit to St. Vital is on the agenda, be sure to visit the Riel House National Historic Site of Canada commemorating Louis Riel, the founding father of Manitoba. Riel’s body lay in state for two days in this house following his execution for his role in the North-West Rebellion. The house remained in the Riel family until 1969, and was later restored and furnished as it was in 1886, six months after his death.

If it’s a nice day, you can enjoy a picnic in St. Vital Park, one of Winnipeg’s largest parks.

Come to St. Vital and check out its many restaurants, services and businesses. If you’re lucky, you might just bump into Stanley Cup hockey champion and St. Vital native son, Jonathan Toews!
