This quiet town is located some 50 kilometres south of Winnipeg. The first thing visitors see when they enter Otterburne is the stately Providence College – a giant building standing in the middle of the Manitoba prairie!
The structure was initially built in 1925 to be a Catholic school. Providence College bought it in 1970 and Otterburne is now the site of the largest non-denominational Christian school in Manitoba.
The origin of the town's name is difficult to trace. Some people suggest it comes from the words “otter” and “burn” – a Gaelic word meaning a small river, because of its proximity to the Rat River.
